Editorial policy & methodology
Auto insurance is confusing and high-stakes, so we hold our guides to a clear standard. Here's how we research, write, and keep them accurate.
What we're trying to do
Every guide exists to answer a real question a driver is asking, in plain English, accurately. We aim to explain how auto insurance actually works so you can make a confident decision — not to push you toward a particular product.
How we research
We base our guidance on primary, authoritative sources rather than opinion, including:
- The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)
- The Insurance Information Institute (III)
- State Departments of Insurance and their published requirements
- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
- Insurer and regulator publications on coverage rules and consumer rights
We deliberately avoid quoting specific premiums or savings figures we cannot verify, because real rates vary by driver, state, and insurer. Where we use a number to illustrate a concept, we say so.
This is general education, not advice
Our content is for general informational purposes and is not insurance, legal, tax, or financial advice. Coverage requirements, availability, and your legally required minimum limits vary by state and insurer. Always confirm the right coverage for your situation with a licensed agent or your insurer before you buy.
Accuracy, review, and updates
We review our guides for accuracy and update them as rules and best practices change. We are also expanding our process to include review by a licensed property & casualty insurance professional, and will credit that reviewer on the guides once in place. If you spot something that looks wrong, please tell us at contact@theinsurancer.com and we'll look into it.
Editorial independence
The Insurancer earns referral fees from insurance and marketing partners — see How We Make Money. That business model does not influence our guides. We do not let partners write, edit, or approve our educational content, and a partner paying us more never earns more favorable coverage in what we publish.
